Just days after Mary Kate moved to Houston and Kyle came back from a guys’ trip to Germany, they met up with friends for drinks. Mary Kate thought it would just be her friend, Jen and Jen’s boyfriend (now husband), Spencer. Kyle, still recovering from Oktoberfest, wasn’t in much of a mood for drinking, but had heard “Jen’s single friend” might be there, so he decided to join along with his friend, Jacob.
The next day, Kyle told Jen that he wanted to ask Mary Kate out on a date. After determining that a Facebook message was too risky, he decided it would be better to text her. Jen was planning on talking to Mary Kate beforehand, but before she could give her a heads up, Kyle eagerly texted Mary Kate first thing in the morning, asking her to go to the Houston Texans game with him later that week. This happened to be the morning of Mary Kate’s first day at the EY office, full of meetings and other distractions. Kyle waited a very long 5 or 6 hours to get a response back. Although terrified that her lack of sports knowledge would not fare well on this date, she happily accepted.
The Texans game ended up being just the first of many dates for these two. It wasn’t long before they both realized they couldn’t possibly imagine a life without each other.
Kyle picked up Mary Kate at the airport after she returned from a trip to Italy with her mom. They were so elated to see each other – it was the longest the two had been apart since they met.
As they drove off, Kyle nervously began switching lanes and speeding back to Mary Kate’s apartment. “We’re not in a race to get anywhere, Kyle… we’re just picking up pizza!” She didn’t realize why he was in such a rush, but didn’t think anything of it.
After picking up the pizza and arriving at the apartment, Mary Kate opened the door to find flowers, wine, and a note on her kitchen counter. Since Kyle frequently did thoughtful things of this nature, Mary Kate figured it was an “I missed you so much, welcome home” surprise. As she turned around to gush, thank, and kiss him, she noticed Kyle’s heart was pounding out of his chest. Before she could process what was happening, Kyle was down on one knee asking her to marry him. After a very emotional return back home, the two took the following day off work to enjoy the beginning of the rest of their life together.
